Runner of the Week Kristina

Runner of the Week Kristina

Name:

Kristina

Where do you live?

Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Is there anything that sets you apart from other runners?

The thing that separates me from other runners is how slow I am!  If we run together, we will quickly become separated as you sprint ahead of me 🙂

What keeps you motivated?

The number one thing that keeps me motivated is achieving new goals.  But I am also motivated by the people around me – mostly other running bloggers who are achieving awesome goals of their own.

Do you have a favorite race length?

10k

If you could run with anyone (living or dead), who would it be?

Scott Jurek.

Hands down, no questions!

Some women dream about being whisked off to a tropical island by Brad Pitt.  I dream about being paced by Scott Jurek!

What is your all-time favorite race? Why?

So far I’ve only run in a few 5Ks, but I am now preparing for my first half marathon and I think it will be my favorite race. I’m finding that during my long runs the second half of the session is when I feel the best. Up until the 2 to 2.5 mile mark I’m really just getting warmed up, so I think I’ll enjoy the half a lot more than my 5Ks (though i liked them too!).

Do you have a favorite pre-race food?

I’m always afraid of having to use the bathroom during a run (you know you are too!) so I prefer to just have a meal replacement/nutrition drink before I go running. My favorite is the Publix brand of Ensure in chocolate.

Post-race food?

Post-race I’m not big on eating a meal either. I usually need a little while to settle down, so it’s another Publix nutrition drink for me!

What piece of running gear could you not possibly live without?

I love my Brooks Adrenaline shoes, but other than shoes I couldn’t live without technical tees. It’s so nice to not have your shirt caked onto your skin!

What do you tell yourself when you are struggling?

I used to tell myself, if Scott Jurek can run a 100-mile race on a bum ankle you can finish this 5 mile training run, but then I realized how flawed that logic is. Scott is a tough dude.

Now I just envision myself crossing the finish line at my next race and that always lifts my spirits and gives me a little extra energy!

Do you have any current goals?  Races?

Yes, my first half marathon will take place on November 10th! I am very much looking forward to it!

What advice would you give to someone who’s new to running?

I just had a friend message me on Facebook this morning asking for advice on getting into running. I sent her back a novel, but to condense my advice into a shorter version:

Commit yourself to a future race (probably of the 5K distance) to hold yourself accountable. With a hard date in mind, you will have to stay on track with your training.

Also, look for motivation everywhere – pinterest, running blogs, books, etc. Immerse yourself in running motivation!
